ALBANY ATHLETICS WIN UPPER NEW YORK STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
WITH 7-0 WIN OVER TWILIGHT OPPONENT ALL-STARS ACADEMY

 

ALBANY -- Tournament Most Valuable Player John Venditte drove in six runs in the Upper New York State Championship as the Albany Athletics of the Albany Twilight League defeated fellow league opponent All-Stars Academy, 7-0.

 

                Venditte, who went 6-for-13 with 9 RBI's in the three-day event, smacked a 2-run single in the first inning, a three-run homer in the 3rd inning, and an RBI double in the 7th inning. Chris Burdo went 3-for-4 (2 singles, double) with an RBI and Josh Kean had two singles for Albany. The Athletics turned in fine pitching performances by starter Bill Lawton (5 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 3 BB, 3 K, win) and reliever Sean Connor (2 IP, 0 R, 2 H).

 

                Albany outscored its opponents 34-5 during the four tournament wins, including an 8-0 win on Friday night over Kingston (ONT), an 8-5 win over Syracuse on Saturday afternoon and an 11-1 win over All-Stars late Saturday night to advance to today's championship.

 

                Albany (26-10-2) will make the trek to Long Island for the North Atlantic Regional Tournament from Friday, August 2-Sunday, August 4. The event features a six-team field with the Massachusetts state champ, Metro-NY champ, Mid-Atlantic champ, Connecticut champ, host and Upper New York champ.  The Athletics will face the Metro-New York champion at 10 am on Friday, August 2nd and with a win, play at 1 pm against the Massachusetts champion.

 

                All-Stars Academy (17-8), who was making its first trip to the State Tournament, advanced to the championship game with a 16-4 win earlier in the day over Kingston (ONT) Ponies. John Wojtusik hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Nick Scattereggia smacked a two-run homer in the fourth inning. Matt Crudo added two singles and 2 RBI in the win.

 

                Jeremy Tisdale had a two-run homer in the first inning for Kingston.

 

                The Albany Twilight League concludes its season this week with rain make-ups, then begins its league playoffs the following week.  Monday night the Athletics play Mama's at 7:30 pm.
